“It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself and to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary.” — Mandy Hale

The skin is the largest organ of your body and the first thing people notice. For me, the process of taking care of my skin is a ritual of self love. Often when I do this, I find myself alone. My favorite is when my husband and baby are asleep and it is just me, peace and quiet.

This simple act, twice a day, makes me feel better about myself, my day and my future.

The skincare industry is ever-evolving and there are countless of tools out there to help you step up your skincare routine at home and get the results you want. Thankfully, I am here to filter through and let you know the key products. Visit your aesthetician less when you start taking advantage of the tools & tech that is available:

CLEANSERS + EXFOLIATORS

I can’t stress how important it is to clean your face everyday, 2x a day. Cleansing is your gateway to clearer, brighter and healthier skin. By removing the dirt, debris and oil, you are keeping your pores clean to reduce acne and breakouts. Exfoliating is a great way to encourage your skin cells to turn over, revealing fresher, brighter looking skin. It removes the dead layer of skin that is no longer serving you, making space for the new layer that is more receptive to your skincare products.

LED LIGHT THERAPY

This is a non-invasive treatment that passes through the skin’s layers to improve the skin. Here’s a fun fact: NASA began studying LED’s effects in the 1990s by healing astronaut wounds from helping cells and tissues grow. Different lights do different things, penetrating different layers of the skin. They can treat a range of skin issues: eczema, hair loss, mild to moderate acne, psoriasis, rosacea, sun damage, wounds, wrinkles, etc.

  • Purple (400-420 nm) Cell Rejuvenation – increases cell renewal and rejuvenation
  • Blue (450 – 500 nm) Anti-acne + Teeth Whitening – Reduces and eliminates acne-causing bacteria and whitens teeth
  • Cyan (500 – 520 nm) Skin soother – calms and soothes irritated skin
  • Green (520 – 565 nm) Skin Balancer – helps to even skin complexion for naturally beautiful skin
  • Yellow (565 – 590 nm) Redness Reducer – alleviates redness from inflammation
  • Orange (590-625) Revitalizer – promotes a brighter glow for more radiant looking skin
  • Red (625-700 nm) Anti-aging – combats wrinkles and increases collagen production

MICRONEEDLING

A minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that helps reduce the signs of aging, improve the appearance of acne scars and rejuvenate skin. Personally, I’ve never tried this before but makes a lot of sense to me in theory. Essentially, you’d be poking many tiny holes into your skin for serums and other products to seep right in, working more effectively. It’s the collagen boosting treatment that dermatologists swear by. A go-to treatment for improving acne scarring.

ROLLERS + SCULPTORS

Facial rollers are often made from a natural stone like rose quartz or jade and are used as a temporary treatment. They can improve the overall texture and color of the skin by rolling the stone away from your face (upward and outward) for at least 5 minutes. The whole experience is very relaxing, distributing skincare ingredients more evenly, reducing puffiness, improving lymphatic and blood flow, while reducing stress. Gua sha has been part of traditional Chinese medicine practices for thousands of years, and is used to help relieve tension and boost blood circulation throughout the body.

FACIAL STEAMER

On the days when I’m down and in need of a mood boost, I love to steam my face. Facial steaming warms up the face which makes it more available to receive any treatments you put on after (serums, masks, etc.). It increases blood circulation to the skin, and opens your pores for easier removal of dirt, oil and debris. It’s best to use the steamer after cleansing and followed with any treatments, serums and topped with moisturizer lastly. It is recommended that you make use of it once a week at a safe distance so you don’t burn your face.
